Careers · Frequently asked

Everything people ask before they apply.

The long version. If something you need is missing, ask Joie directly — the answer will be just as straight as these.

The associate program

What is the associate program, in one paragraph?

You are hired as an employee and paired with one or two Master Stylists. You assist on their guests — formulating, applying, finishing — and you take your own guests on opportunity days as each skill clears its checkpoint. It runs ten months to two years. At the end you move onto the floor as a Star Stylist with a clientele you have already started building.

How is advancement decided?

On skill against a set of checkpoints, not on time served. Your mentor reviews where you are at regular check-ins, so you always know which skills are signed off and which are next. Two people starting the same week can finish months apart, and that is the system working rather than failing.

What does “coachable” actually mean here?

Taking a correction on a Tuesday and applying it on the Tuesday, not defending the original choice. It is the single best predictor we have of who finishes the program well — better than technical skill on arrival, and better than how good someone’s work looked in school.

Do I get my own guests during the program?

Yes, on opportunity days, and earlier than most people expect. The point is to build a real clientele while you are still supported, so that the day you finish you are not starting from an empty column.

What happens at the end of it?

You come onto the floor as a Star Stylist with your own chair and the book you have built. Your mentor stays close for a while — the relationship does not stop the day the program does.

What if it is not working out?

You will know long before we do anything about it, because the check-ins are regular and specific. If the fit is wrong we would rather say so early and honestly than let someone spend a year finding out.

Pay, hours and benefits

How does associate pay work?

Two kinds of day. On assisting days you are paid a guaranteed hourly rate. On opportunity days, when you take your own guests, you are paid commission or hourly — whichever is greater. Tips are yours on top of both. The guarantee is there so that learning properly is not a pay cut you have to fund.

What do stylists earn once they are on the floor?

Commission, as a W-2 employee, rising with the level you reach. Ask us for the earning range at each level on the first call — we will give you real figures for Star, Star Plus, Advanced and Senior rather than a single number that flatters the top.

Is there booth rental at any level?

No. Not for associates, not for Master Stylists. Everyone is an employee on commission, the salon buys the colour, and nobody carries the cost of a quiet week alone.

What are the salon’s hours?

Tuesday 8–8, Wednesday 8–7, Thursday 7–7, Friday 7–5, Saturday 9–5. Closed Sundays and Mondays.

What availability do you ask for?

Associates are asked for two evening shifts a week and every other Saturday. Those are the hours guests with jobs can actually book, so they are the hours that build a clientele fastest. Stylists on the floor work a schedule set with the front desk around the same reality.

Is education really paid?

Yes — 32+ hours a year, on the clock. L’ANZA training, in-salon sessions and outside classes. It is scheduled like any other shift.

Applying, and what happens next

What does the hiring process look like?

Four steps. You send an application and Joie reads it. You have a phone or video conversation. You come in for a day, shadow the floor and meet the team. Then a final conversation with Becky and a decision. You will have seen the room on an ordinary day long before anyone asks you to commit.

How long does it take?

Usually two to three weeks, mostly determined by how quickly we can get you in for the day on the floor. If it is going to run longer we will tell you why.

Will you contact my current salon?

Not without your permission. Looking for a new job should not put your current one at risk. If we get as far as references, you tell us when we may call and who.

Can I bring my existing clients?

That depends on what you agreed with your current salon, and we will not ask you to breach an agreement to come and work here. Some stylists arrive with a full book and some arrive with none — it does not change whether we want to hire you. Raise it on the first call and we will talk it through properly.

Do I need a licence?

For stylist and associate roles, yes — or a licence you are about to sit for. Shampoo tech and guest services do not require one.

Should I send a portfolio?

If you have one, yes — an Instagram handle is perfectly good and often better than a formal résumé. There is a field for it on the application. If you do not have work to show yet, that is expected for a new graduate and it will not count against you.

I am interested but not ready to apply.

Ask about the next education night. It is a normal evening in the salon with the team and no one will treat it as an interview. Email Joie at joiehelleven@gmail.com or DM @hairelleven with the word GROW.

The salon itself

Where are you?

518 Madison St. SE, Huntsville, AL 35801, in the middle of downtown. You are welcome to come and see it as part of the process.

What colour line do you use?

L’ANZA, throughout. Training on it is part of your paid education.

How big is the team?

Small enough that everyone knows how everyone else works, which is the point. It is also why we are careful about who joins.

What do you book with?

Phorest. Guest services runs the calendar; stylists work from it daily.
